Sennheiser celebrates 70th anniversary, looks back at how it started

Audio specialist Sennheiser is celebrating its 70th year in business by rewinding the clock and explaining how the company first started out.

The company was founded on June 1st 1945 as Laboratorium Wennebostel – or “Labor W” for short – by electrical engineer Prof. Dr. Fritz Sennheiser in Wennebostel, Germany. Initially, the young enterprise produced tube volt meters.

In 1947, Sennheiser launched its first microphone developed in-house. The first “shotgun” microphone followed in 1956 and in 1958, Labor W was renamed Sennheiser electronic.

In May 1982, Prof. Dr. Jörg Sennheiser (pictured left), son of Prof. Dr. Fritz Sennheiser (pictured right), was appointed MD.

Today the firm remains a family-owned enterprise, now headed by a third generation of the Sennheiser family: today’s CEOs Daniel Sennheiser and Dr. Andreas Sennheiser are the grandchildren of the company’s founder Prof. Dr. Fritz Sennheiser.
