Tech behemoth Facebook has launched a work-focused version of its popular online social network for use only by employees and their specific companies.
Facebook at Work is now available in browser and iOS app form, and lets the user create a work account entirely separate from their personal Facebook account. Things they share using this work account will only be visible to other people within their company.
Employees can’t just use Facebook at Work if they want to, however – their employer must also sign up to Facebook at Work for use within their company.
The announcement follows rumours late last year that Facebook was working on a business-focused network site to rival LinkedIn.
When a user wants to share something from their work account, they can either share it with everyone at their company or make it only visible to them by selecting an ‘Only Me’ option.
Editing personal details becomes a little difficult, however. When a Facebook at Work employee account is set up, the profile will automatically include information provided by the person’s employer (like their name, job title and work contact info) but it can only be edited by the company. Pictures and other details can be tweaked by the employee.
The Facebook at Work app lets users stay up-to-date with a news feed that shows what’s new and relevant within their company, create and join groups or send messages to collaborate with co-workers.
