Nvidia has unveiled its most powerful mobile processor, the Tegra X1.
Dubbed ‘the world’s first mobile super chip’, the Tegra X1 has 256 processor cores, a 64-bit CPU and 4K video capabilities.
In a demonstration at CES 2015, CEO Jen-Hsun Huang ran a live demo of the Unreal 4 gaming engine running Elemental IV.
But rather than enhancing gaming, or being used in mobile devices just yet (at the moment, Nvidia says the chip is too powerful to be used in current devices), the Tegra X1 will start off being used in cars.
"We believe future cars will be the most advanced computers in the world," said Huang.
He explained that Nvidia believes cars of the future will feature multiple HD displays that the Tegra X1 can help run.
Along with the processor, Nvidia unveiled a car computing platform called Drive CX, which will be compatible with QNX, Linux and Android car systems. The platform will help the centre console of cars to aid drivers with things like navigation and driver monitoring.
