BACK IN PCR’s July 2014 issue, our mystery shopper gave an unforgiving assessment of Toys R Us’ Peterborough storedue to the store’s cluttered shelves and messy floors.
While this was disappointing, having worked on PCR sister title ToyNews, I knew that it was most likely a one-off. Toys R Us still has a lot going for it with its wide range of categories, not to mention that classic Christmas ad jingle.
The chain has also recently implemented a revamp of its tech and electronics sections in its stores, in a bid to make it easier for customers to find what they need. I visited the retailer’s Brent Cross store and was surprised by the sheer variety on offer.
The first area that jumps out at you is the tablets section, where there are plenty of kids tablets available. Sections are now clearly marked and split into sections, rather than having a jumble of goodies that customers previously may have accidentally stumbled over.
The audio section particularly impressed me. Toys R Us has just embraced the kids fitness tech and Bluetooth speaker/sound tower categories, and also has sections for headphones and portable DVDs.
With this wider variety of categories comes an increased opportunity – for tech vendors to get their goods in Britain’s biggest toy chain.
