Apple maintained the lead shipping 12.3 million tablets

Worldwide tablet market grows 11.5%

Worldwide tablet sales have grown by 11.5 per cent year-on-year during Q3 2014, thanks to back-to-school promotions and US growth.

Tablet shipments reached 53.8 million according to IDC, while the third quarter also saw shipments grow by 11.2 per cent compared to Q2 2014.

Jean Philippe Bouchard, research director for tablets at IDC, said: “Not only is the US market one of the largest for tablets, but third quarter results also indicate that this is where the growth is."

Apple maintained its lead in the tablet market, shipping 12.3 million units in the third quarter.

Samsung shipped 9.9 million units capturing 18.3 per cent of the market share, however, Asus shipped 3.5 million units, taking 6.5 per cent of the market share.

Lenovo shipped three million units worldwide, while RCA shipped 2.6 million.

Bouchard added: “We also saw RCA enter the top five, impacting the entire US market and worldwide ranking with one large deal linked to back-to-school and channel fill ahead of Black Friday.

“Those two elements resulted in the US tablet market growing at 18.5 per cent year-over-year compared to the worldwide market growing at 11.5 per cent annually.”
