New security marketplaces announced for CES 2015

Security roundup: Spammers exploit Ebola outbreak

This week we take a look at how fraudulent Ebola emails, CES 2015’s new security-focused marketplaces and more.

Kaspersky has reported that the amount of spam in September’s email traffic averaged 66.5 per cent, with one standout subject being the Ebola crisis.

“Spammers routinely try to exploit breaking news and topical events. The scammers seldom miss an opportunity to use high-profile events to attract the users’ attention and convince them that these fraudulent emails are for real,” commented Tatyana Shcherbakova, Senior spam analyst at Kaspersky Lab.

“So after the first news reports about Ebola emerged in July, it was no surprise to start seeing related mass mailings as early as September, exploiting the headlines to deceive recipients and extort money from them.”

Meanwhile, the Consumer Electronics Association has announced the launch of the Personal Privacy and Cyber Security marketplaces at CES 2015.

“As we all embrace the convenience and ‘always connected’ powerful capabilities of our electronics devices, our privacy and security take on even more importance,” said Karen Chupka, senior vice president, International CES and corporate business strategy, CEA.

“We developed the Personal Privacy and Cyber Security Marketplaces to highlight companies and organisations who are developing advanced solutions to stop identity theft, fraud and other cybercrimes. We are excited to experience these new innovations designed to protect our personal information.”
