Will be available for consumers 'in the next quarter'

Seagate ships world’s first 8TB hard drive

Storage vendor Seagate has announced it is shipping 8TB hard drives into the tech market.

One month ago, reports circulated online suggesting the company had sent out early versions of the drive to key enterprise customers for testing.

Seagate now says that the 8TB drives will be widely available ‘in the next quarter’.

The new HDDs come in the usual 3.5-inch form factor and have SATA3 (6 Gb/s) interfaces. Aside from these few details, Seagate has not revealed any further specs at this time.

Seagate CEO Steve Luczo said: "We have delivered 8TB customer development units to major customers and cloud service providers and the initial customer feedback has been very positive."

The company is also developing a 10TB hard drive.
