Chip maker Nvidia is skipping the GeForce GTX 800 series and will instead launch 970 and 980 graphics cards next month, according to reports.
Apparently this is because Nvidia originally decided to launch mobile GM204-based parts under a 900M GeForce series, instead of the rumoured 800MX, but changed its mind as this would result in inconsistency in how it names its desktop products.
Otherwise, there would be a desktop 800 series and a mobile 900M series in a very short space of time.
So Nvidia has now reportedly decided to go straight to a GTX 900 series instead, to remain consistent with the 900M mobile GeForce range.
The 900 series graphics cards are rumoured to be announced at a press event on September 9th around the second generation Maxwell architecture, with the card details embargoed until September 19th.
Nvidia is set to launch the GTX 960, 970 and 980 in October, as well as its 900M mobile card.
Reports also suggest that AMD will soon launch three new cards – the Radeon R9 285, R9 285X and R9 295X.
It’s worth taking this news with a pinch of salt, however, as the original story was sourced from Videocardz.com – which incorrectly predicted Nvidia would show off a GTX 880 graphics card at Gamescom in Germany earlier this month.
