UK tablet and desktop display sales rise – Context data

Tablet unit sales across UK distribution increased by 27.7 per cent year-on-year in Q2 2014, driven primarily by an increase in Android-based systems.

In a statement sent to PCR, analyst Context said: "Growth in Android sales led to a year-on-year increase in Android share and to a decline in consolidated tablet ASPs (average selling prices), from £206 in Q2 2013 to £185 this year.

"Volume growth during the quarter was strong enough to offset the year-on-year price erosion and translated into a 13.6 per cent revenue growth across UK distribution compared to last year. While Q2 2014 still saw tablet units in UK distribution increase at a double-digit rate year-on-year, overall tablet growth rates moving forward are expected to slow down from the strong rates registered a year ago."

Context also revealed that sales of desktop displays rose 18 per cent across the UK during Q2 2014.

Shipments across Western Europe rose 14 per cent year-on-year during the quarter, however shipments for the rest of the EMEA region were flat.

“Growth was mainly driven by the corporate refresh following extended PC life cycles and the end of XP support”, said Lachlan Welsh, senior analyst at Context.

“Consumer-targeted monitors have also experienced growth with budget conscious consumers able to acquire larger monitors at price points previously reserved for entry level devices.”

Central and Eastern Europe had another weak quarter, down 27 per cent, with the ongoing political situation in Russia and the Ukraine making a major impact.

Meanwhile, the Middle East & Africa region recorded a six per cent year-on-year decline. However, EMEA saw multi-function monitor sales increase by 15 per cent year-on-year.
