Cortana coming to UK in new Windows Phone 8.1 update

Microsoft has announced an update to its Window Phone 8.1 mobile operating system.

Named ‘Update 1’ – chief among the new features includes the personal assistant application, Cortana, which will be launching during the next week in the UK and China.

Microsoft is bringing the software in beta to the UK and China, which will include data relating to temperature change and air quality, warnings on driving restrictions, information relating to celebrities, along with a more informal style.

Cortana will be available in alpha within countries such as Canada, India and Australia.

As well as this, Update 1 will support new screen resolutions, including qHD, or 960 x 540 and 1280 x 800, which will enable manufacturers to create a device with a larger screen.

App Corner will also feature within the new update, which helps to control what apps the device can use, an appropriate addition to the phone for parents.

The update also contains a mix of quality of life and feature upgrades. Xbox Music is also included, which has been updated with faster loading times and improved scrolling.

Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 will be available within the next week to those on the developer preview.

This news comes after Microsoft announced the decision to cut up to 18,000 jobs within the firm.
