Lenovo has extended its lead as the world’s top-selling PC vendor, after shifting some 14.5 million units in Q2 2014.
The vendor now has a global market share of more than 19 per cent, ahead of HP which has a share of around 18 per cent, according to new data from analysts Gartner and IDC. HP sold around 13.5 million units during the period.
Dell, Acer and Asus are in third, fourth and fifth place respectively, with respective market shares of around 14 per cent, eight per cent and six per cent.
Dell sold more than 10 million units during Q2 2014, Acer around six million and Asus around five million.
Lenovo’s PC shipments grew by double digits in all regions except Asia/Pacific.
However, in EMEA, HP was number one with a 20 per cent share of the computing market, ahead of Lenovo, Acer, Asus and Dell.
After eight quarters of declining shipments, Gartner said worldwide PC shipments experienced flat growth in Q2 2014, with worldwide PC shipments totalling 75.8 million units – a 0.1 per cent increase from the same period in 2013.
IDC meanwhile states that worldwide PC shipments reached 74.4 million units during the period – a decline of 1.7 per cent.
Gartner also reported that PC shipments in EMEA totalled 22.5 million units in the second quarter of 2014, an 8.6 per cent increase from the same period last year.
Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner, said: “The PC market’s installed based has been declining as buyers switched to tablets and smartphones for entertainment and social media consumption. The 2Q14 results suggest that the consumer installed base restructuring peaked during 2013.
"We are seeing a slowdown in premium tablet sales, which have already penetrated a large number of households. PCs are now growing off a smaller installed base of newer devices, with more engaged users. Therefore, we expect to see slow, but consistent, PC growth. While the end of support for Windows XP drove some of the sales in developed markets, it is the underlying business replacement cycle that will stabilize the market.”
Gartner recently predicted the PC market would show a ‘relative revival’ this year.
