Firm insists it will sell the fitness band for ‘the foreseeable future’

Nike fires 55 FuelBand workers but denies wearable tech will be discontinued

Nike has said it will continue to sell and support its fitness band despite firing 55 of its 70-person FuelBand team.

The job cuts were announced on Sunday, April 20th, with many assuming that the news meant Nike would be killing off its wearable tech product.

Since then, the firm has released a statement to recode.net insisting that it will not be discontinuing the FuelBand and calling the product ‘an important part of our business’.

“We will continue to improve the Nike+ FuelBand App, launch new METALUXE colors, and we will sell and support the Nike+ FuelBand SE for the foreseeable future,” reads the statement.

“We will continue to leverage partnerships to expand our ecosystem of digital products and services, using NikeFuel as the universal currency for measuring, motivating and improving.”

Last year, the Nike+ FuelBand won the Health and Fitness category at CoolBrands, an award which was voted for by 3,000 consumers and 38 ‘key influencers’.
