A further 17 per cent of games are only played for less than an hour

36.9% of Steam purchases have never been played

A new insight into the digital lives of Steam users has revealed that over a third of games purchased by users go unplayed.

Ars Technica’s report exploring Valve’s service found that 36.9 per cent of registered Steam games are never played, with a further 17 per cent only played for less than an hour.

The report also revealed that Dota 2 is the most owned game on the service, with 25.93 million copies. In fact, the 13 most owned Steam games come from Valve, with the highest ranking non-Steam title – Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – coming in at 14th.

Furthermore, about half of the estimated 18.5 billion hours that have been spent playing Steam games are put into just six games – Skyrim, Civilization V, Counter-Strike, Counter-Strike: Source, Team Fortress 2 and Dota 2.
