'A lot of these smartwatches need phones [but] mine doesn’t need a phone – [it] is the phone'

Will.i.am to launch smartwatch in July

Pop star Will.i.am is to release his own smartwatch this July.

The Black Eyed Peas member and The Voice judge demonstrated the wearable tech on comedian Alan Carr’s Chatty Man chat show.

“I don’t carry my phone anymore – this is my phone,” explained Will.i.am.

“A lot of these smartwatches need phones [but] mine doesn’t need a phone – [it] is the phone.”

He went on to explain that he was self-funding the venture.

Will.i.am previously released a camera accessory for the iPhone, named the i.am+ foto.sosho. The £199 (or £299 for the gold-trimmed ‘vintage’ edition) add-on vanished from sale a few months after its release.

The as yet un-named smartwatch was revealed to have a July date via Will.i.am’s Twitter, with the musician saying more details would be available soon.

Discussing the watch, Will.i.am mentioned that features included Twitter, Instagram and Facebook support, as well as compatibility for Bluetooth headphones.

PCR predicts that possible names for the smartwatch may include the ‘Will.on.time’, ‘Will.i.am.pm’ or the ‘i.am.early’.
