The Basis health-tracking band will continue to be sold and supported through its existing channels

Intel gets ‘immediate entry’ into wearable tech market by acquiring Basis Science

Intel has announced that it is buying Basis Science, the firm behind the Basis band.

The start-up’s health-tracking band, which monitors the user’s heart rate and calorie burning, will continue to be sold and supported through its existing channels.

"The acquisition of Basis Science provides immediate entry into the market with a leader in health tracking for wearable devices,” said Mike Bell, Intel vice president for the New Devices Group.

"As we accelerate our position in wearables, we will build upon this foundation to deliver products that bring people greater utility and value."

Intel has not disclosed the value of the deal but industry analysts have suggested the acquisition is worth $100 million (£60m).
