Little Big Disk boasts speeds of up to 1,375 MB/s and is billed for editing 4K video in the field

‘Fastest ever’ portable storage device costs over £1,000

A new device billed as ‘the fastest portable storage solution ever’ – the LaCie Little Big Disk – has a starting price of £1,059.

The external storage device features Thunderbolt 2 technology, delivers speeds of up to 1,375 MB/s and is small enough to fit in a laptop bag. It is billed as ‘a truly portable solution for editing 4K video in the field’.

The Little Big Disk boasts a pair of 500 GB PCIe Gen 2 SSDs, and claims to transfer dailies ten times faster than any mobile USB 3.0 hard drive. For example, it’s possible to transfer 300 GB of 4K footage in less than three minutes.

By daisy chaining two Little Big Disks, the user can even achieve transfer speeds faster than the maximum Thunderbolt 2 transfer rate. For example, by connecting them in parallel to Apple’s new Mac Pro, they can deliver speeds up to 2,600 MB/s.

Professionals can also daisy chain up to five LaCie Little Big Disks plus a 4K display, and connect them to a computer via a single cable, creating a ‘plug-and-play 4K video editing environment’.

The device also features two heat-dissipating aluminum plates in addition to a larger, thermoregulated fan. This means that the fan only turns on when necessary, and when it does, it produces ‘nearly zero’ noise.

The new Little Big Disk is available now in 1TB SSD capacity through the LaCie online store and LaCie resellers, and comes with a three-year limited warranty. LaCie is the premium brand from storage specialists Seagate Technology.
