Basis currently captures around seven per cent of the wearable tech market

Intel acquires smartwatch maker Basis

Smartwatch maker Basis has been purchased by Intel for a reported $100 million.

At this year’s CES, Intel revealed that it has been working on wearable devices and unveiled the Jarvis – a small earpiece which listens to voice commands to make calendar appointments, check messages and set reminders on a user’s smartphone.

Intel also hinted that it was working on a smart bracelet but gave no further details about the project.

With the acquisition of Basis, the firm may now plan to release a smartwatch, which would put it in direct competition with the likes of Samsung, LG, Huawei and a host of other companies that have unveiled smartwatches during CES and MWC this year.

Basis currently captures around seven per cent of the wearable tech market.
