HP’s PC sales rose during its Q1 2014 financial period, and CEO Meg Whitman has likened competing with rivals to a ‘knife fight’.
"Pleased with the progress, more work to be done," Whitman told Reuters.
"It’s a battle. It’s a knife fight every single day out there, but we feel we’ve got the right ammunition," she later told analysts.
Revenues reached $28.2 billion for the quarter ending January 31st 2014 – down one per cent from the prior-year period and flat on a constant currency basis – beating Wall Street estimates.
PC revenue was up four per cent year-on-year. Total units were up six per cent with desktops units down three per cent and notebooks up five per cent.
Printing revenue was down two per cent, enterprise group revenue was up one per cent and enterprise services revenue was up six per cent. Additionally, software revenues dipped seven per cent year-on-year.
"HP is in a stronger position today than we’ve been in quite some time," Whitman added.
"The progress we’re making is reflected in growth across several parts of our portfolio, the growing strength of our balance sheet, and the strong support we’re receiving from customers and channel partners.
"Innovation is igniting our comeback, and at a time when many of our competitors are confronting new challenges, two years of turnaround work is setting us up for an exciting future."
