Online retailer enjoyed strong components, gadget and gift sales over Christmas

Ebuyer sees laptop sales rise, DRAM and SSD prices stabilise

Online electronics retail giant has reported a rise in sales of laptops over Christmas, and says that the price of SSD and DRAM is starting to stabilise.

MD Stuart Carlisle told PCR: "Over the Christmas period we saw a general rise in laptops, as well as a strong showing in components sales, gadgets and gifts. Tablets and smartphones were also a big growth sector again, as expected.

"Despite market growth in tablets and laptops, we still see strong sales of desktop PCs, graphics cards and monitors."

Ebuyer says its ‘Daily Deals’ offer was extremely popular over the last quarter, especially in the run up to Christmas.

The etailer has also seen SSD and DRAM prices start to stabilise, following the Hynix factory fire in China last year, which caused a DRAM supply shortage and price rise.

Andy Halliday, Head of PPC & Search at, added: "DRAM, HDD and SSD is always going to be price volatile – changes in technology are so rapid the sector bears the brunt of its evolution.

"The fire naturally effected everyone involved as it slowed down production of a vital part – therefore pushing up prices. SSD and DRAM has fallen back to a figure close to what we had in 2011, so it has stabilised, just at a slower rate than other components.

"The only way to combat it is to work closely with the manufacturers – like we do – so we can negotiate the best deals if prices fluctuate."
