MediaTek has announced its first smartphone processor with eight cores, which has reportedly seen interest from ‘first-tier’ device manufacturers.
The MT6592 will launch in China in time for the Lunar New Year holiday period, and has seen an “enthusiastic response from first-tier China-based smartphone vendors including Lenovo, ZTE, Huawei, Coolpad and Xiaomi Technology,” according to sources cited by Digitimes.
Use of the octa-core chipset is expected to lower the costs of high-end smartphones, according to the sources, with an estimated saving of 1,500 Chinese yuan (£51) on average per handset.
Production of the processors using a 16nm FinFET process, for which MediaTek is collaborating with the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, is expected to begin in 2015.
