Towns unite to get families back on the High Street for Christmas

Indies urged to take on Christmas challenge

Independant tech retailers nationwide are being encouraged to take part in this year’s ‘Celebrate an Independent Christmas’ campaign.

Now in its second year, the campaign is designed to get indies, town teams, local councils and business improvement districts together to create a ‘Christmas Shopping Challenge’ for their town.

“Families collect Christmas bauble stickers from ten different shops. They don’t have to buy something to get one, but they do need to speak to someone, which gives the sales assistants a chance to engage the customers in conversations about their products,” said Retail Champion Clare Rayner.

Once a family collects ten bauble stickers, they are awarded a certificate and the children are given a gift.

With tablets expected to be a big seller this Christmas, plus the focus on families, Rayner says the campaign is a great way to get parents clued up on tech for kids.

“I suggest PC retailers stock up on low-cost rugged Android tablets this Christmas,” she said.

“Lots of children are expected to come into stores so it’s an opportunity to speak to parents about suitable technology for kids.”

As well as appealing to children, Rayner believes the campaign is a great opportunity for retailers to show they can compete with etailers.

“If retailers can get them in the shop and start chatting, they can show the customers that the products and pricing are comparable, and there’s someone there that really knows what they’re talking about and can help them if they have any problems,” she said.
