Argos sees CCTV sales soar

Retailer Argos is enjoying a lift in burglar alarms, CCTV and other security products thanks to smarter technology being deployed in the sector.

The UK chain put its success down to its “universal appeal” and wide range – from entry through to high-end products – as well as an increase in smartphone app usage.

“We do a reasonable business on security products and as consumers gain a greater familiarity with wireless technology we are seeing more products coming to market,” technology trading manager Simon Barry told PCR. “Burglar alarms and CCTV used to be challenging due to running miles of cables but now just need to be screwed to the walls.

“Tech security such as CCTV and maybe software for PC protection has traditionally been seen as ‘man’s work’ but I think it is much more gender neutral now.

“We also see apps playing a bigger part in people’s lives – child monitors and smartphones are quite prevalent. Additionally, we are seeing a major uptake of people wanting camera kits to monitor their pets at home – checking their moggie or pooch is okay while they are at work all day.”

Argos says that the market for security software has also grown due to an increase in online scams.

The retailer recently launched a free service that allows parents to monitor different websites their children visit – and block certain inappropriate or possibly unsafe content.

“The web is great, but parents need to prepare their children and, when asked, most consider it important but don’t really know what to do,” added Barry.

“Security is very relevant today, partially because this kind of identify fraud and scamming is increasing and partially because of mass distribution services such as Twitter, Facebook and email – you tend to hear about things that may have always existed but have only just been outed.

“As more people browse the web, security of some description is de rigour.”
