Microsoft has launched Windows 8.1, the long-awaited update to its Windows 8 operating system.
The major update is said by Microsoft to fix many maligned aspects of the OS, including restoring the Start button to Windows 8’s desktop mode, improving the Metro Start screen, redesigning the Windows Store and adding “more extensive apps and services”.
Bing smart search and a higher level of customisation have also been added.
Windows 8.1 is a free update for Windows 8 users and can be downloaded from the Windows Store.
Windows 7 users can also update to Windows 8.1, for the same price as an upgrade to Windows 8.
The OS will be available for new devices and as a boxed product from tomorrow (Friday, October 18th).
“Windows 8.1 evolves the Windows vision for highly personalised computing while showcasing Microsoft’s continued commitment to rapid and responsive development,” said Microsoft in a statement.
