Plants vs. Zombies sequel chews up records for EA as it passes 16 million downloads

Plants vs. Zombies 2 becomes EA’s biggest mobile game ever with over 16 million downloads

Plants vs. Zombies 2 has become EA’s most successful mobile game ever, with over 16 million downloads since it launched last Thursday.

PvZ2, which unlike the original Plants vs. Zombies is free-to-play, also came close to topping records for Apple’s App Store, achieving one of the biggest opening weekends for a mobile game.

PvZ2 almost doubled previous EA day-one download numbers, sitting at number one in the App Store chart in 137 countries. The game is exclusively available on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, with the game launching on other platforms later this year.

‘[T]o see fans playing the game so quickly and in such huge numbers is truly amazing,’ said Tony Leamer, EA’s Franchise Business Director for Plants vs. Zombies.

The game requires players to collect sun and plant plants in order to fight back hordes of approaching zombies throughout different historical periods.

According to figures from EA, in the five days since PvZ2 launched, its players have played for over 25 million hours combined, generating over 11 billion suns to fight off over two billion waves of zombies with over four billion plants.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 can be found for free on the App Store here.
