Google’s Chromebook is now on sale in nearly 7,000 retail outlets

US: Chromebooks are the fastest-growing segment of the PC industry

New research from NPD Group reveals Chromebooks are now the fastest-growing segment in the US PC market.

Google’s Chromebooks have taken 20 to 25 per cent of the US market for laptops that cost less than $300.

While everyone has been claiming that tablets are the future of computing, it appears Google’s been doing quite well selling low-cost notebooks running its OS. The devices are now on sale in nearly 7,000 retail outlets, including Best Buy, Walmart and OfficeMax. They are also available from online retailers such as Amazon.

“The entire computing ecosystem is undergoing some radical changes, and I think Google is a part of that change,” commented NPD analyst Stephen Baker.

Acer and Asus are reportedly planning to launch their own Chromebooks in the second half of the year, and last month HP unveiled it’s first ever Chromebook, the HP Pavilion 14.
