Free-to-play title grew its monthly user base to more than three million players.

Dota 2 finally launches, beta ends

Dota 2 has officially gone live after a two-year beta.

The online-only PC game – which is free to download and play but not available as a boxed product in retail stores – picked up a monthly user base of over three million users, and peak concurrent users of over 300,000.

Dota 2 and Half-Life developer Valve says due to the demand for the game, the launch will be "done in waves". Players can sign up to be added to the launch queue and will receive an email from Valve when the company is ready for them to join.

"We want to avoid a situation where a rush of players overloads our server infrastructure," read a statement.

"As we increase our capacity, we will let more people in from the launch queue. Our goal is to get people in as quickly as possible.

Dota 2 is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game, which rivals other PC MOBA titles like League of Legends and upcoming Blizzard All-Stars.

Like League of Legends, Dota 2 is a free-to-play online multiplayer game. Players can pay extra for "cosmetic" upgrades to customise their in-game heroes.

Valve is asking the community what it would like to see in the future.

"We’ll be looking to hear from you about how we’re doing and about what you’d like us to build next," read a statement.
