Sony has added a bigger, more waterproof smartphone to its Xperia Z lineup.
The Xperia Z Ultra is 1.4 inches bigger than the original Xperia Z, which the firm unveiled in January.
The waterproof phone can be submerged to a deeper limit than the previous model – 1.5m in freshwater for up to half an hour. Sony has also addressed the complaints about the headphone socket flap.
The Xperia Z had a flap to protect the socket from water damage, but some complained the feature was too fiddly. Sony has designed the Ultra to not need a pesky flap anymore. Magic.
As well as its waterproof feature, the phone has a 1080p resolution screen with built-in software to upgrade lower definition videos and photos.
The Xperia Z Ultra also includes 16GB of internal storage with support for 64GB microSD cards, 8MP rear camera, a battery offering up to 11 hours talk time, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, and 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor.
It measures just 6.5mm thick, making it only slightly thicker than the world’s thinnest smartphone, the Ascend P6.
An interesting feature of the new handset is that its screen works with a standard pencil or metal-tipped pen, meaning users don’t have to hunt around for a stylus. With durable tempered glass coated in an anti-scratch film, the screen should be able to handle all those potential scrapes.
The Xperia Z Ultra will launch globally from Q3 2013.
