Hybrid laptop and tablet sports both Windows 8 and Android Jellybean operating systems

Samsung announces Ativ Q dual-OS tablet

The South-Korean firm used yesterday’s Premier event to unveil the Ativ Q hybrid tablet and laptop, which also combines both Windows 8 and Android into one device.

Sporting a 3200 x 1800 touchscreen, which Samsung believes to be the market’s highest resolution display, the device also features an Intel Hawell i5 CPU in addition to 4GB of DDR3 RAM and a 128GB SSD.

Most interesting, however, is the device’s inclusion of both Windows 8 and Android’s 4.2.2 Jellybean operating systems. During its presentation of the Ativ Q, Samsung emphasised the device’s ability to run Android applications – even from the Windows 8 desktop.

Users will have access to both the Windows and Google Play stores, whilst files will be transferable across both operating systems.

As a hybrid device, the Ativ Q is useable both in its flat "tablet" form, or an additional three modes, including the traditional laptop position, or the "float" and "stand" configurations for improved media viewing.

With its slim 13.9mm frame and nine-hour battery life, the Ativ Q is designed for portability, however its 45oz weight might hinder its appeal to users on the go.

No UK release date or pricing has been released yet, but Samsung did confirm the Ativ Q will make its debut before the end of the year.
