Leading chip-maker introduces its fourth-generation of core processors, which focus on mobility and Ultrabook devices

Intel officially unveils Haswell processors

Leading chip manufacturer Intel has finally lifted the lid on its latest Haswell generation of CPUs.

Intel has promised that the fourth-generation of core processors will provide both better battery life and increased graphic performance over its predecessors.

The firm states that the Haswell family of chips is capable of delivering 15 per cent increased overall performance, in addition to 50 per cent more battery life and up to three times more standby time that Ivy Bridge products.

As a result, Intel claims the Haswell architecture is able to deliver nine hours of battery life and maintain enough juice to last over ten days on standby.

With the launch of the Haswell range, Intel is hoping to reaffirm its focus on ‘2-in-1’ devices, such as all-in-one desktops and laptops, with the processors offering increased mobility and a focus on the Ultrabook genre of devices.

Intel also confirmed that whilst systems powered by the quad-core Haswell chips are now ready available, Ultrabook and convertible devices are expected in the summer.

Meanwhile, Haswell powered mobile devices are expected to hit by the end of the year.

"4th generation Intel Core processors offer the most significant gain in battery life enabling ever achieved by Intel, up to double the graphics and significant CPU performance improvements that are delivering exciting new consumer experiences," said Kirk Skaugen, Intel senior vice president and PC Client Group general manager.

"Today’s announcement accelerates a new category of 2-in-1 computing devices delivering the best of a notebook and a tablet in amazing new form factors. This year is the perfect time for consumers to refresh their old tablet or PC with these new 2-in-1 devices."
