Richard Williamson joins the social network

Fired Apple Maps exec hired by Facebook

Richard Williamson, a member of Apple’s original iPhone team, has joined Facebook to manage its mobile-software group.

Williamson lead the development of Apple’s widely criticised Maps application and after a huge number of user complaints, was fired by Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice-president of internet software and services.

Apple Maps appeared to have a number of major bugs, including missing directions and incomplete 3D views. In December, the Australian police warned motorists off Apple’s own mapping system after some people were lead into dangerous terrain.

Williamson has now taken the role of director of engineering at the Facebook’s mobile-software department as the social network ramps up its focus on reaching customers on mobile devices.
