Adam Harris: Are you too busy working ‘in’ your business to work ‘on’ your business?

One definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting a different result each time. We have all done it. We know there may be a better way but we keep on using the same formula hoping that results will improve. As a business owner, it is an easy trap to fall into. You spend all your waking hours dealing with emergencies, making sure that people keep promises, and responding to customers. You are working in your business – not on your business. Nobody is taking responsibility for making sure that the right things are happening – so that some of the things being done in your business are different and better than the things that were done yesterday.

Making those changes creates the growth and the value in your IT business.

Success in business is dependent on a clear understanding of your market, the ability to delight your customers and the energy and enthusiasm to get everything done. Many businesses still fail however – even though they have these positive attributes in abundance. They allow important things to be overlooked. If the overlooked items include banking the cheques and reconciling the cash-flow, then it very quickly becomes urgent.

To take one example – book- keeping, if you lack the time or people in your business to keep up with your book- keeping, outsource it. Your accountant should be able to offer a service. If your books are always current, you will always know your cash position. More importantly, it will free up your time to work on the business improvement activities that will drive growth and value building.

The most successful businesses have a clear strategy and vision. And the owners of the business are working on the business, not in it – ‘managing’ rather than ‘doing’.
