Will use the operating system for its smart TVs

LG buys WebOS from HP

LG has bought the WebOS operating system from HP.

According to T3, the deal will give LG a viable platform on which to run its range of smart TVs.

HP originally brought WebOS on board as part of its acquisition of Palm, and the orginal intent was for it to power the line of Slate tablets as well as running on its short-lived line-up of smartphones.

Unfortunately, following poor sales of the tablet devices, HP shelved its plans and ditched its CEO Leo Apotheker.

This latest deal gives LG complete control of the WebOS platform, including source code, documentation and developers, and the company has already announced the arrival of WebOS-powered smart TVs.
