Servers breached by ‘extremely sophisticated’ techniques

250,000 Twitter accounts hacked

250,000 accounts may have been compromised after the popular social network was hacked last week.

In a blog post, Twitter’s director of information security, Bob Lord said that the attackers were extremely sophisticated and speculated that the attack may have been part of a wider strategy to target high profile websites.

Apparently, one attack was discovered and shut down while it was underway but the follow up investigation found that a number of passwords may have been obtained in encrypted format.

Twitter has reset passwords for the affected accounts.

“This attack was not the work of amateurs, and we do not believe it was an isolated incident. The attackers were extremely sophisticated, and we believe other companies and organizations have also been recently similarly attacked,” said Lord.

“For that reason we felt that it was important to publicize this attack while we still gather information, and we are helping government and federal law enforcement in their effort to find and prosecute these attackers to make the Internet safer for all users.”
