Publishers drops struggling franchise after lukewarm reception

EA drops Medal of Honor in favour of Battlefield boost

EA has announced that its Medal of Honor franchise has been taken "out of rotation" after disappointing sales.

Medal of Honor made its return to gamers’ screens in 2011 after a three-year hiatus but struggled both critically and commercially.

Last year’s Warfighter outing failed to fare any better and as a result the publisher has decided to drop the franchise.

Instead, EA will focus primarily on its highly-acclaimed Battlefield franchise, which will now have its development boosted in order to become an annual series, adding further fire to the rivalry between the franchise and its closest rival, Activision’s Call of Duty.

"Critics were polarised and gave the game scores which were, frankly, lower than it deserved," EA COO Peter Moore told investors. "This one is behind us now. We are taking Medal of Honor out of the rotation and have a plan to bring year-over-year continuity to our shooter offerings."

Whilst fans of the Medal of Honor will no doubt be disappointed to see the franchise fade into the darkness again, it’s unsurprising to see Battlefield receive a major development push, given that EA recently revealed that its Premium subscription service for Battlefield 3 had accumulated close to three million subscribers, generating sales of over $108m.
