Asus Windows phone could be based on the Padfone

Asus ‘in talks’ with Microsoft to licence Windows Phone 8

Asus exec Benson Lin has told WSJ that the firm is ‘in talks’ with Microsoft to manufacture a Windows Phone 8.

Lin suggested that a Windows-based device from Asus could take the form of the company’s Padfone: "With our Padfone concept, the phone plus tablet, I think it makes sense for Windows 8. There is no target timeline, but we are interested in making Windows phones."

With smartphone shipments growing 45 per cent last year, and PC sales declining for the first time in five years, it is no wonder that Asus is interested in crossing further into the mobile space market.

Lin also revealed that Asus is talking with telecom operators about launching its phones in the US in 2014.
