According to Broadcom, Apple will upgrade its Macs this year to include 5G WiFi.
Apple’s purported chip partner says the technology will increase wireless connectivity to speeds in excess of a gigabit per second.
Broadcom told The Next Web that Apple has ‘struck a deal’ with the company to include its 5G WiFi (802.11ac) chips in Apple’s 2013 Mac lineup.
The inclusion of 802.11ac networking will offer faster throughput, higher capacity, wider coverage, and improved power efficiency.
Broadcom is one of only a small number of chipmakers currently providing 802.11ac chipsets. Although Broadcom launched its 5G WiFi line at last January’s Consumer Electronics Show, the WiFi chips that will be used in Apple products are still in development.
For the most part, 802.11ac chipsets haven’t found their way into many mainstream devices, although Asus has released some 5G-enabled products.
