TfL approves plans to provide free service

Black cabs to get free wi-fi

London’s iconic black taxi’s will soon be offering 15 minutes of free wi-fi to passengers who agree to watch a 15 second advert.

According to Engadget, a company called Eyetease has received approval from Transport for London to turn every black cab in to a roaming wireless 802.11 hotspot.

Once the passenger has watched the advertisement, the roaming router will automatically patch in to local 3G and 4G networks as the taxi moves through the city.

In order to see as early a deployment as possible, taxi drivers will be incentivised by being offered unlimited and commercial free use of the service in exchange for having it installed.

The plan has probably been approved as it falls in to the mayor Boris Johnson’s plans to turn London in to the planet’s most connected city.
