Gartner: Android holds 72% of global smart phone market

Devices using the Android operating system now accounts for 72 per cent of the total global mobile market.

According to research from Gartner, smart phone sales now account for 39.6 per cent of the wider mobile market, and although the market as a whole declined by 3.1 per cent year-on-year, smart phone sales grew by 46.9 per cent.

“After two consecutive quarter of decline in mobile phone sales, demand has improved in both mature and emerging markets as sales increased sequentially," said Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner.

“In China, sales of mobile phones grew driven by sales of smartphones, while demand of feature phones remained weak. In mature markets, we finally saw replacement sales pick up with the launch of new devices in the quarter.”

The standings for global market share in operating systems currently stand at:

1. Android 72.4%
2. iOS 13.9%
3. RIM 5.3%
4. Bada 3%
5. Symbian 2.6%
6. Microsoft 2.4%
7. Other 0.4%
