New York launch starts at 11.15am ET

Microsoft to host Windows 8 event webcast

Microsoft will launch its new operating system, along with its first ever tablet, today in New York.

The tech company will be offering everyone the chance to view the event in a live webcast.

Although Microsoft has not released an agenda or revealed who will be taking the stage, it is safe to assume that there will be appearances from Steven Sinofsky and CEO Steve Ballmer.

"For Microsoft this is a very, very important launch," said Annette Jump, a research director at analysts Gartner. "It is a major software shift which Microsoft is hoping will help it expand beyond the PC. It will either enable them to expand to tablets and smartphones, but if it doesn’t, then it will be a setback."

Last week Microsoft announced pricing for the Surface and opened up the gates for pre-ordering to begin. The tablet will start at £399 for the 32GB Windows 8 RT version.

You can follow all the event action from 11.15am ET by watching Microsoft’s webcast here.
