Barnes & Noble to launch Kindle rival Nook in the UK

Following the announcement of Barnes & Noble’s international expansion, the company has revealed that its Nook ereader range will be available in the UK from mid-October.

Having launched in the US over a year ago, some wondered why the Nook was taking so long to make it overseas. It turns out that licensing ebooks takes time and money, and with a financial boost of $300 million (£191m) from Microsoft in April, Barnes & Noble was finally able to get the wheels in motion and bring its ereader range to the UK.

“We’re confident our award-winning technology, combined with our expansive content – including books, children’s books, magazines, apps, movies and more – will bring UK customers the option they’ve been waiting for,” said Barnes & Noble chief executive William Lynch.

Set to rival the likes of Amazon’s Kindle range, Nook will have 2.5 million digital titles on offer, including books, newspapers and magazines.

As well as the physical devices, Barnes & Noble will bring content through new online store Nook.co.uk to its UK customers.

The first products in the range to come to the UK will be the Nook Simple Touch and the Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight. Both of which feature a 6-inch E Ink touchscreen display with an 800 x 600 resolution and wi-fi connectivity.
