Latest rumours out of China indicate a slimmer 7.6mm body

iPhone 5 slims down

As the iPhone 5 rumour mill continues to churn, the latest word from China is that the sixth-generation device will be trimming the fat.

The news was first reported by Chinese newspaper Apple Daily, which cited an "in-person report" as the source of the information, who claimed the latest device will measure just 7.6mm in depth.

Interestingly, the reduction still wound not qualify the latest iPhone as the slimmest smartphone on the market, but it would shave an impressive 1.7mm off the body of the previous iPhone 4S, which measured in at 9.3mm.

Whilst there was no mention in the Chinese leak as to how Apple plans to slim down its device, earlier rumours have hinted at the iPhone’s use of a super-thin screen, thanks to in-cell technology.

It’s becoming increasingly difficult to keep up with all of the iPhone rumours flowing out of China as we edge ever closer to September and the various dates heavily tipped to host the device’s release.

Earlier this week, a selection of code found within the latest beta release of iOS6 seemed to confirm the iPhone’s rumoured larger screen, allowing users to scale its resolution to an increased 640×1136.

If correct, the resolution would indicate that the iPhone 5 will incorporate a four-inch screen, closing the gap between similar devices currently on the market, such as Samsung’s Galaxy S3, which boasts a 4.8 inch screen.

Whilst the anticipated screen would still be surpassed by other devices, if its rumoured 7.6mm body comes to fruition, the iPhone 5 would be slimmer by at least one millimetre.
