Department store group John Lewis has revealed a significant uptake in sales during the UK’s rainy summer, with its Electrical and Home Technology department a ‘star performer’ for the brand.
In a statement, John Lewis said that store sales had increased 15.3 per cent year on year to 71.6 million pounds in the week to July 7th.
Buying director Paula Nickolds commented: "The continued miserable weather, coupled with the third week of a successful Clearance, saw customers heading to our shops for some retail therapy.
"The best results were delivered by the maturing at home branches – Poole, Swindon, Croydon and Tunbridge Wells – and congratulations also go to the Scottish branches which achieved some of the best results in our full-line estate. The team at jl.com also delivered another week to celebrate with sales an impressive +45 per cent on last year."
Interestingly (or perhaps unsurprisingly if you’re an IT optimist!), she pointed out that Electrical and Home Technology was the ‘star performer’.
"EHT was the star performer this week at +34 per cent on the year, and with a good balance of trade across their assortments."
Nickolds concluded: "The summer months are likely to require a flexible and reactive approach to trading as the combination of unpredictable weather and a huge influx of tourists could present numerous opportunities. With only two weeks to go until the London 2012 Opening Ceremony, I’d encourage all Partners to be proactive in helping the business make the most of this unique time ahead."
