Sandia Cooler could reduce US electricity output by seven per cent

The fanless heatsink is ten times smaller than commercial coolers, yet 30 times more efficient.

Sandia National Laboratories has revealed that two companies have licensed the technology.

Inventor Jeff Koplow said that if every conventional heatsink in the US was replaced with a Sandia Cooler, then the country would use seven per cent less electricity.

Most of these savings would come from air conditioning and refrigeration systems, as the cast metal impeller floats on a hydrodynamic air bearing 0.03 millimetres about a metal heat pipe spreader, this provides an impressive cooling performance.

The Sandia Cooler is silent in operation, due to its fanless design, and boasts dust immunity. Here’s a video posted by Sandia National Laboratories demonstrating its features:
