Transport for London has named King’s Cross, Liverpool Street, Stratford, Leicester Square and Oxford Circus as the first five Tube stations to receive free Wi-Fi during the Olympics.
Eventually 80 stations across London will be installed with Wi-Fi by the end of July. Virgin Media, who won the contract, will make the web available at ticket offices, escalators and platforms.
London Underground’s strategy director Gareth Powell said: "The first stations include some of our busiest and most well-known destinations and we’re on track for a successful launch this summer, all delivered at no additional cost to fare-payers or taxpayers."
After the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the free service will become pay-as-you-go, but Virgin Media customers will be offered continued access as part of their subscriptions.
