The much-delayed European version of Sony's electronic book store finally arrives. Can be used on Android and iOS devices.

Sony launches ebook Reader Store

Sony has opened the European version of the Reader Store, after months of delays, finally offering the chance to download books directly to Sony eReaders.

Originally Sony said that the store would appear in October of last year but then the date was pushed out to the end of the year, and then again to the ‘spring’. The delays angered some Sony eReader owners given that customers needed to obtain ebooks from third-party book stores.

Now the newly launched Reader Store allows Sony eReader owners to download books directly to the device, or to install a PC application and buy books from within that.

The company also offers the Sony Reader application for Android and iPhone smartphones and tablets which means that Sony’s store is a fresh way to buy books for owners of those devices.

Sony’s eReader approach is to use the open standard ePub format, rather than a proprietary format, so owners of Sony eReaders can pick and choose how they get their books – from the Sony Reader Store or from a third-party store like Waterstones.
