Google’s June developer conference in San Francisco sold out 5,500 tickets in just 20 minutes as developers scrambled to snap up a ticket earning them to chance to see Google’s latest and greatest technology.
The Google I/O conference covers several aspects of Google’s business including building web and mobile applications, as well as a keynote address and sessions focusing on various Google products such as Android, Google+, Maps and Google Chrome.
"While we’re overwhelmed with the interest and enthusiasm around Google I/O, we know it can be very disappointing and frustrating when an event sells out this quickly," said Google engineering veep Vic Gundotra.
Gundotra revealed that the registration server was being hammered by over 6,000 requests per second when the US$900 tickets went on sale. As a result the internet giant is set to stream the keynote address live and make session videos available within 24 hours.
One of the reasons for the heavy demand is no doubt down to Google’s habit of handing out ‘free’ developer hardware in order to demonstrate the latest version of Android, for example. At Google I/O 2011, attendees each received a Google I/O edition of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and a Samsung Chromebook.
Gundotra drew attention to the I/O Live site which will host the live keynote address and technical sessions.
