The popular Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone is to finally begin receiving an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the UK market as of next Monday the 19th of March.
Despite the announcement of a the upgrade, the Korean electronics giant threw in the caveat that the upgrade is "dependent upon each network’s own software approvals process."
Samsung is one of the Android smartphone makers that opts for a custom UI skin. Samsung’s in particular is called TouchWiz and it’s a fairly light touch compared to the more comprehensive UI overhaul of HTC’s Sense.
It seems that Samsung’s ICS upgrade bundles a TouchWiz that looks much like the previous Gingerbread version – which in turn looks quite a lot like Gingerbread. Android blogger JR Raphael said that Samsung owners that were expecting a swish new upgraded Android would be disappointed.
"But stripping out the hallmarks of a reimagined user interface and sticking instead with a clunkier, outdated-feeling configuration?", Raphael asked of Samsung.
"From a user’s perspective, I’m just not sure what kind of value that provides," he said.
