The British government has approved the US extradition request for a 23-year-old student Richard O’Dwyer following piracy charges concerning hosted-link site TVShack.net.
The Home Secretary Theresa May approved the request to send O’Dwyer to the US where he will face charges of copyright infringement under US law. The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency alleges TVshack.net earned $230,000 from advertising before the agency seized the domain last year.
"I’ve done nothing wrong under UK law. It’s pretty ridiculous isn’t it," O’Dwyer told BBC Newsbeat, adding that copyright laws differed between countries.
"Richard’s life – his studies, work opportunities, financial security – is being disrupted, for who knows how long, because the UK Government has not introduced the much-needed changes to the extradition law," said O’Dwyer’s mother.
The same 2003 Extradition act was last week used to extradite retired British businessman Christopher Harold Tappin whom the US alleges sold batteries to Iran which would be used in missiles.
O’Dwyer has two weeks to appeal the Home Secretary’s decision.
