Freeview HD sales ‘surge’

Sales of Freeview HD-cable televisions and set-top boxes surged in the final quarter of 2011 with 4.4 million devices having been sold so far.

The year-on-year sales of Freeview HD televisions more than doubled in December and now the HD version of Freeview+ devices accounted for 30 per cent of sales. Of course we could state that another way; 70 per cent of people who buy Freeview devices go for the non-HD version. Tightwads or perhaps they reckon their eyes aren’t up to it?

"2012 is set to be a landmark year for the television industry," said Freeview boss Ilse Howling. "We have entered it with a bang as a result of fantastic Freeview HD sales figures."

Freeview reckons that 81 per cent of people in the UK can get the HD version of the signal and the figure will rise to 85 per cent in time for the Olympics.

BARB viewing figures show that two million homes are actively using the Freeview service. It’s not clear where the other 2.4 million Freeview devices are, perhaps holding open doors and stopping important documents from being blown around by a stiff breeze?
