Describes move as a improved way of dealing with tweets which some countries find objectionable.

Twitter can now censor tweets by country

Microblogging platform Twitter announced that tweets can now be removed on a country-by-country basis when compelled by authorities.

Up until now Twitter has had no ability to remove tweets except in total on a global basis but now the company can remove tweets only in countries where a tweet has fallen foul of local authorities, appearing elsewhere without hindrance.

"We haven’t yet used this ability, but if and when we are required to withhold a Tweet in a specific country, we will attempt to let the user know, and we will clearly mark when the content has been withheld," the company posted on the Twitter blog.

The company followed in Google’s footsteps, adding a page on Chilling Effects where take down notices were documented.
